The annual Powder Injection Molding Tutorial will run on February 25, 2019 at MIM2019: the International Conference on Injection Molding of Metals, Ceramics and Carbides, Orlando, Florida, USA, February 25–27, 2019. Conducted by Randall M German, FAPMI, Professor Emeritus, San Diego State University, the course will provide a basis for determining options, uses, properties, applications, and opportunities for cost-effective PIM manufacturing.

Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is an advanced manufacturing technology for the production of complex, high volume net-shape components. The technology shares similarities with Additive Manufacturing processes such as binder jetting, often using the same size and type of metal powders and sharing binder removal and sintering stages.

The course is said to be an ideal way for anyone looking for a solid grounding in the technology of PIM to obtain a comprehensive foundation in a short period of time. It is highly recommended for consumers of PIM components and organisations that are exploring the opportunities associated with developing their own PIM manufacturing facilities.

Topics that will be covered during the course include:

  • Introduction to the manufacturing processes: feedstocks, moulding, debinding, sintering, and finishing
  • Definition of what constitutes a viable PIM component
  • Selection of materials based on component expectations and required properties
  • Assessment of the critical features of dimensional accuracy and material performance
  • Comparison of PIM to competing technologies
  • Review of the economical advantages of PIM
  • New applications, emerging markets, and examples of products never thought possible in net shape manufacturing until PIM

Registrants to the course will receive the publication Metal Injection Molding—A Comprehensive MIM Design Guide. Registration is available via the MIM2019 conference website.
