Raymor Industries Inc, a leading developer and producer of single-walled carbon nanotubes, nanomaterials and advanced materials, announces that its wholly-owned subsidiary, AP and C Advanced Powders and Coatings established in Montreal, Canada, in 2004, has commenced operations on its second metal powder production unit.
As a result, AP and C has received new orders for the third and fourth quarter of 2007 totalling $1,23 million for the supply of its spherical titanium (CP Ti) powders from a major US orthopaedic implant company. With over $2 million in orders for 2007 from this client, whose identity is protected by confidentiality agreements, indications are that orders from this client will be renewed, at a minimum, in 2008.
With the second metallic powder production unit now operating, AP and C will be in an excellent position to meet additional demand for its CP Ti powders, as well as to put in place a significant production capacity for Ti-6Al-4V powders. AP and C’s metallic powders, including CP Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Nitinol, are produced using the patented Plasma Wire Atomization (PWA) process.
In this process a pre-qualified titanium wire is continuously fed through the apex where three argon plasma torch jets meet. The wire begins to melt and droplets shear off in a superheated zone completely consuming the wire. The droplets fall down a tall water jacket argon-filled tower and during their time in freefall physically transform into their most natural state dictated by surface tension – a perfect sphere.
The spheres are collected semi-continuously and sieved into three powder sizes: 0-45µm, 45-75µm and +75µm. This process produces a highly pure metallic powder with an exceptional sphericity.
