PTC thermistors: injection moulded heating elements
June 19, 2009
PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors are used as heating elements in a wide variety of sectors, from diesel fuel preheating systems to automotive spray nozzle defrosting solutions and low-voltage home appliances.
EPCOS AG, based in Munich, Germany, is a market leader in this sector and has developed innovative production technology involving powder injection moulding. This allows it to produce thermistors in almost any desired shape thereby opening up new applications for ceramic heating elements.
The company states that injection moulding has enabled the production of shapes such as tubes, nozzles and rotor blades for ventilators in addition to the round disks, rings and rectangular plates that were previously produced.
