Neoshapes, based in Geneva, Switzerland, has highlighted its use of Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing (LMM) from Incus GmbH, Vienna, Austria, to support the redesign of a luxury watch case in precious metal.

Following on from the initial announcement of their partnership, this project began with the deconstruction of an existing watch, rather than the development of an entirely new timepiece. According to Neoshapes, the aim was to explore how Incus’ LMM Additive Manufacturing technology could be used to optimise complex watch case geometries and fine decorative features in precious metals.

Following the disassembly of the original watch, Neoshapes used 3D scanning systems to create high-resolution digital models of each component. The company then evaluated multiple design concepts before developing a new watch case intended to take advantage of the geometric freedom enabled by the Additive Manufacturing process.

Taking advantage of the new design allowances, the redesigned case incorporates intricate filigree details and fine structures that would be difficult or impossible to manufacture using conventional production methods.

Incus’ Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing is a Vat Photopolymerisation (VPP) process designed for the production of high-resolution metal components with fine feature detail, particularly in applications requiring precision and surface quality.

The companies stated that the project demonstrates the potential of Additive Manufacturing for luxury goods applications, particularly in the production of customised or highly detailed precious metal components.
