Desktop Metal, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, has commenced shipments of its Production System™ P-50 Additive Manufacturing machine, with the first customer to receive the new model announced as Stanley Black & Decker.

Headquartered in New Britain, Connecticut, USA, Stanley Black & Decker is the world’s largest tool company operating nearly fifty manufacturing facilities across America and more than one hundred worldwide. The company’s iconic brands include DeWalt, Black & Decker, Stanley and Craftsman.

The P-50 platform is reported to be the result of nearly $100 million in investment and a four-year development programme, overseen by Desktop Metal engineers and materials scientists. The P-50 is designed to mass produce high-performance metal parts with the repeatability and cost required to compete with conventional manufacturing using Single Pass Jetting™ technology, a proprietary form of metal Binder Jetting.

The platform supports a materials library which includes ten qualified metal alloys, from commercially pure copper to stainless steels such as 17-4PH. Additional metal alloys are in active development.
