Smith Metal Products receives Federal Firearms License

Smith Metal Products, Center City, Minnesota, USA, has been awarded the Federal Firearms License (FFL). The new license joins its other accreditations, including ISO 13485, ITAR and ISO 9001:2015.

Smith Metal Products supports its ‘bridge to Metal Injection Moulding’ parts capability with Binder Jetting capability. As well as not requiring time-consuming and expensive mould building to evaluate the designs of metal injection moulded parts, the use of BJT in the evaluation stage can eliminate and/or significantly shorten lead time from R&D into full-volume production. Quick-turn short runs are also available.

Often, components that require the manufacturer hold a Federal Firearms License also need to be made from expensive, high-performance materials, like titanium and Inconel. Smith already has experience processing some of these materials, and is willing to develop processes for other high-performance materials as needed. Sometimes, extensively hollowed-out parts made of these materials produced via Metal Injection Moulding can be provided at near-net shape for less than the raw bar stock needed for machining parts prior to performing any machining.

The company is said to operate the latest metal binder jet metal Additive Manufacturing technologies; electric moulding machines; continuous and batch debinding & sintering furnaces; catalytic debinding systems; 5-axis CNC machining and lathe centres; ceramic kilns; coining; laser etching/engraving and inspection lab.

Smith also provides rapid prototyping and a complete array of value-added services including plating, laser welding, heat treatment, surface finishing and polishing, assembly, final pack-out and more. The company manages single and multi-cavity, hot runner and unscrewing mould design and builds at local domestic tool shops near the facility.
