NIST to run ceramic Additive Manufacturing workshop this November

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, will hold a workshop on ‘Materials Research & Measurement Needs for Ceramics Additive Manufacturing’ at its base in Gaithersburg, from November 13–14, 2019.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together experts from early industrial adopters of ceramic AM, AM equipment manufacturers, government agencies and academia, to identify the most promising broad-impact applications of ceramic AM. The workshop will also cover the associated materials measurement needs, which NIST believes could accelerate the incorporation of AM methods into commercially viable ceramic manufacturing technologies.

During the two-day workshop attendees will critically review the opportunities and challenges for ceramic AM in key market sectors with discussions focused on formulating the materials research directions to bridge critical knowledge gaps that presently hinder the broader deployment of ceramic AM technologies.

The programme will also include discussions of lessons learned from metal and polymer AM, and prospects for the AM of hybrid ceramic/metal and ceramic/polymer materials or gradient-microstructure ceramics. Some emphasis will be placed on research efforts to address ceramic AM measurement needs in a range of application areas.
